Jim McFarlin
Veteran FOX2 (WJBK-TV) Detroit anchorman Huel Perkins has hailed Jim McFarlin as "one of the best journalists in print, in broadcasting, I have ever heard, seen or read." Legendary comedian Soupy Sales, after a broadcast interview by McFarlin, enthused, "Newspaper's loss is radio's gain…I really think you've found your thing here."

That's because McFarlin, best known for his 16 years as a columnist, critic and reporter at The Detroit News, is that most valuable of media commodities: a popular and talented print journalist who also is skilled at imparting information and entertainment on television and radio. As the television critic for the weekly (Detroit) Metro Times and former co-host and producer of the popular Detroit movie review show Flix & Pix, McFarlin displays in both forums the relaxed style, insightful candor and warm sense of humor that has allowed him to spend an entire career shifting easily between all facets of the communicating arts.

He began in radio at age 15, working on air at both the AM and FM stations for WGHN, a small news and music combo in Grand Haven, Mich. After joining several other radio outlets in western Michigan – including one, WKBZ, where he originated and hosted the area's first weekly R&B music program, Proud! – McFarlin became a beat reporter for The Grand Rapids Press, the beginning of his print journalism experience.

Moving to Detroit, he maintained his passion for radio by initiating full-fledged coverage of the medium at the News and creating the "Big Mac Radio Awards," an annual salute to the city's best on-air talents. The Detroit Metro Times once declared, "Jim McFarlin is the best radio writer on the planet." He made national TV appearances as a media expert on Entertainment Tonight and E.D.J. ("Entertainment Daily Journal") and locally on Spotlight on the News, Kelly & Company, American Black Journal and countless other programs.

He helped launched the "Albom in the Afternoon" radio show, hosted by best-selling author and celebrity Mitch Albom, on Michigan's top-rated station, WJR, as the show's first studio announcer and co-host. He hosted his own weekly series for four years on WCHB in Detroit, a three-hour, celebrity driven interview program, while filling in on the station's morning-drive, midday and evening shifts. McFarlin also served as a frequent morning-drive guest or fill-in host on WOMC, WRIF, WCSX and WDET in Detroit and CIMX in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

In addition, McFarlin spent two seasons as co-host of the public affairs TV series Studio Detroit, another two years hosting the weekly Motor City Sports Show on regional Michigan cable, served as on-camera host for the annual Easter Seals Telethon and has done voiceover work for dozens of local and regional commercials.

He has written, edited or co-edited six books, including the 1,000-page reference work MusicHound R&B: The Ultimate Album Guide and The Exotic Entertainer's Bible, and helped launch five magazines. Currently, he is a regular contributor to HOUR Detroit magazine, The Men's Book Chicago, Wayne State magazine, Deliver (U.S. Postal Service) and B.L.A.C. (Black Life, Arts and Culture) magazine in addition to his print role for the Metro Times. He has been a public address announcer for the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills, and – as a standup

comedian – been featured at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in metro Detroit and Yuk-Yuk's in Windsor.
